Oh my. This album is the heaviest album I have ever heard. The whole album sounds like this - imagine having your feet glued to the ground and a giant 8 ton rock is slowly crushing your body. Pretty damn heavy, right? This album makes Black Sabbath sound like The Beatles. And I LOVE Black Sabbath!

But seriously, folks. You have to get your hands on this album. And I HIGHLY RECOMMEND LISTENING TO THIS ALBUM IN A ROOM AS DARK AS YOU CAN GET IT. Turn it way up. Wayyy up. The experience might frighten you, but it is soo great. There were times during the album when I just had to shake my head in disbelief - this is TOO heavy. How can people make music like this?

Let's take Boris. Massively heavy riff repeating throughout the song. And Dale Crover's drums is basically one big fill. You actually cannot tap your foot or bang your head to this because of the magnificent Crover. Just try to, then give up, frustrated.

Other brilliant tunes include Anaconda and Ligature - just BRUTALLY heavy. It's Shoved has the same riff as Nirvana's "Milk It", except theirs has pauses in the riff, this one is just walking. This album came out 2 years before they did Milk It, so... Zodiac and Your Blessened are good. Buzz does some good tortured vocals on one of these tunes (can't remember actually, too busy drooling over the heavy guitar and bass). If I Had an Exorcism might be the tortured vocals one, actually. I THINK IT IS. That one is short, I believe. Your Blessened is good. They all are. Cow is one of the standouts - one of the best drum solos I've ever heard. However, 'Toad' and 'Moby Dick' are better (even though they both are the exact same thing - hooky pop riff, really long drum solo, hooky pop riff.) This thing is just massive pile of sludge riff and awesome drum solo. Dale Crover is not a fast, extremely technical drummer like Neil Peart (wanker). Frankly, Crover could kill him. Dale is just wailing on the drums. He's like a heavy handed brute who's been given a drum set and some sticks.

Brilliant album. If you like music that's so powerful you might get scared, buy this. Hell, if you have ears, buy this. Or download it, or get it burned from one of your friends, I don't care. ACQUIRE THIS ALBUM.

Stag is adulterated Melvins, which is a good thing. Yes, Buzz Osborne, Dale Crover and their bass player of the moment (Mark Deutrom) still pound away to wake the devil. But the trademark metal chuggers frequently give way to surprisingly musical moments. Sitar, trombone, slide guitar, keyboards, and scratches soften the edges of the music. "Lacrimosa" is ambient chopped apart by power chords. Despite its Satanic subject matter, "Black Bock," sounds less like Black Sabbath than the Archies Stag is most appealing when the Melvins betray their roots, and that's about half the time.

It's great to see any live footage of the Melvins, especially this old, and I was looking forward to it even more since Joe Preston was the bass player on it.
But once it starts, the horrible camera shots/editing degrade this anticipated experience. There are about 3 cameras set up and most are really close to the stage so we get to see weird shots of the band, like a few seconds of King Buzzo's leg close up and close ups of an anonymous face next to an amplifier. The strange, awkward aesthetic continues on the editing that is obviously off in a few instances where the sounds/vocals don't match up with the instruments/mouths.

The audio, however sounds pretty good from the second song on and is one of the few reasons the disc remains enjoyable. Also there is a bonus scene of the Melvins from 1984 (Buzzo looks like he's 16) that is the best part of this DVD.

Overall a disappointment in terms of visual, but would be much appreciated by diehard Melvins fans.


Hey, it's a Melvins' show, alright? Alright! This DVD captures the claustrophobia and heat and frenzy in the same way you'd probably remember it if you'd been there. Isn't that really the point? You would have been drunk or more, things would have been hectic, choppy, hazy. Maybe you would have been hit on the head. Maybe you would have collapsed in a corner. It would not have been glitzy or hi-tech or brightly lit or air-conditioned. It would have been sweaty and turbulent and frenzied and exhilarating and you wouldn't have been able to hear for days. So chuck in the DVD, turn your sound-system up real loud, take off your shirt, pour a beer over your head, get close to the tee vee, and rock out! Relive those days without much of the headache. And the next day you'll remember it as if you'd actually been there back in the day.

If you're looking for mixed greens, then this probably isn't for you, because, let's face it, it's pretty lo-fi, but if you have no problem with crunchy iceberg lettuce, then dig in.


This comes off as something slightly better than a bootlegged show. A two camera setup may be a step above normal bootleg quality but the third camera, (stationary, above the drums) provides less than perfect picture.

For the MELVINS completist, I'd say go for it. Casual fans may want to borrow a friends' copy.

Premier album solo du fou furieux de Shaolin (le nom wu-tangien de Staten Island) : un bordel rapologique inimitable. De l'invraisemblable intro de dingue patenté à "Goin' Down" en passant par "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" et de nombreux délires éthyliques, aucun doute n'est permis : ce Vieux Bâtard crado a pété les plombs ! En tout cas, il ne ment pas quand il affirme qu'il "aime ça brut de décoffrage" puisque la séduction est joyeusement piétinée sur ce disque allumé et sauvage sorti en 1995. ODB se lâche complètement sur les bandes-son voilées du producteur RZA, et s'il ne pète pas dans le micro c'est uniquement parce que l'envie ne lui en est pas venue. Il se fit d'ailleurs tellement remarquer que Mariah Carey, toujours désireuse de s'encanailler, l'invita dans la foulée à participer au remix de son titre "Fantasy".

A priori, néometal ne rime pas avec Arménie, mais System Of A Down ne l'entendait visiblement pas de cette oreille. Brassant un nombre incalculable d'influences (Snot, Mary Beats Jane, Tool, Rage Against The Machine, Faith No More, Biohazard, Korn... voire des formations beaucoup plus confidentielles comme NoMeansNo ou Victims Family), System Of A Down n'en est pas moins parvenu à les accommoder à sa façon, de telle sorte que l'ensemble forme un tout cohérent au ton indéniablement personnel, là où tant d'autres n'auraient obtenu qu'un grossier patchwork. Pour un premier album, c'est donc une sacrée réussite. En outre, contrairement à quantité de groupes de néometal dont l'écoute suscite un irrépressible ennui faisant regretter le metal le plus has-been, System Of A Down maintient constamment l'auditeur en éveil : les compos se suivent et ne se ressemblent pas, un principe qui s'applique également au sein même des morceaux. Car si Serj Tankian assure à lui seul une partie non négligeable du spectacle, passant successivement par tous les registres vocaux imaginables, ses collègues moulinant derrière ne sont pas en reste. System Of A Down a ouvert pour Slayer et on comprend pourquoi !

Après Rated R., Songs For The Deaf est le troisième album de ce qui a été voulu par Queens Of The Stone Age comme une trilogie dont l'ambition dépasse le cadre du pur registre stoner, trop étroit tant les arrangements sophistiqués se révèlent époustouflants. Cependant, c'est bel et bien un pur disque de rock'n'roll qu'ont concocté les ex-cultissimes Kyuss, Josh Homme et Nick Oliveri. On pensera évidemment à ces derniers, à leur formidable énergie dont Dave Grohl, ex-batteur de Nirvana et membre des Foo Fighters, est fan. D'ailleurs, il est venu prêter main forte, ainsi que Mark Lanegan des Screaming Trees, accessoirement compagnon de débauche de Josh Homme, Paz Lenchantin de A Perfect Circle et Chris Goss des Masters Of Reality. Les fameuses Desert Sessions (avec Monster Magnet, Fu Manchu, Soundgarden, etc.) ne sont jamais loin, comme Black Flag, voire la pop des Beatles ! L'enregistrement de ce supersonique ovni fut émaillé de péripéties, du débarquement du producteur Eric Valentine au départ du batteur Gene Trautman. Titanesque dans son envergure, cette fournaise n'est pas près de s'éteindre et devrait rallier tous les fans de rock, quelles que soient leurs obédiences !
