1. What is the video quality like?, I'm a little worried as the DVD has four 5.1 soundtracks.
2. What roughly is the percentage of French DVD's with forced/non-removable French subtitles?. I know Mulholland Drive and I think Ali have these.

Thankfully the excellent French 2 disc Apocalypse Now: Redux doesn't, that is a lovely DVD.

I don't like forced subtitles (even English ones).

p.s - Are you guys/girls all in France?, I didn't realise French spoke English so well.

1 - Sam Carter should be able to answer you about this
2 - I don't know the ratio, but it's too much. Many of the DVDs edited by Studio Canal (Mulholland Drive as you say, and so on) are almost systemically with the subtitles. It's a matter of who owns the rights to the film... Very weird.

We don't like forced subs either... It's really annoying.

And we're not all French. Roughly, we have 3 species around here :
- french (from all over regions of the country)
- corsicans (form Corisca). you kown, that small island in the Mediterrranean Sea, their inhabitants are very... curious
- lots of belgians

the vieo quality is quite good, but I'm not a specialist, actually I don't need extra-quality on my tv (only 55cm...)

I think that French dvd with non-removable subtitles became less and less common... the proportion must be weak

In fact may be it's true and that here we are the exception, very brilliant peopole only in here!!

Very true Zorg. Especially as it isn't even necessary. They must think people are stupid and cannot work out how to turn on subtitles. German DVD's can have this problem too (and a few Japanese ones).

As for Mulholland Drive I ended up getting the Dutch R2 which has DTS and an hours worth of extras (more than the French disc, I think).

Ah yes Belgians, sorry. I forgot about the Belgians (it is a tiny country, to be fair )

As for Corsica. I've heard of it but cannot exactly remember where it is. I didn't realise they spoke French there. Sorry I really meant, are you all French speaking?. Which I guess you are. Although you actually meant "nationality". We are all the same species

I'm no expert either to be honest. My TV is 28 inches (sorry I'm not exactly sure what that is in centimetres. We still use silly imperial measurements in Britain, although I do try and use metric for most things).

I'm happy enough if the DVD is anamorphic and has a decent enough image. Some people get really annoyed at the slightest problem with DVD's (Americans seem to in particular).

I guess distributors assume most French speaking people cannot understand English so they make sure the subtitles are always on.

Whenever I've been to France the French people I spoke to said they couldn't speak English but I suspect this is to force me to speak French. Which is fair enough if you ask me, I was in France after all.

There is also a strong belief English speaking countries (i.e - Not just Britain) can only speak English which unfortunately for the most part is true.
