Twice in a Lifetime (1985)

Gene Hackman stars as Harry Mackenzie, a middle-aged steelworker content with his job and family but feeling something is missing in his life. Harry begins an affair with a sexy barmaid (Ann-Margret) and resolves to leave his wife (Ellen Burstyn) in favor of a fresh start. Directed by Bud Yorkin from a screenplay by Oscar®-winner Colin Welland (Chariots of Fire), Twice in a Lifetime also stars Ally Sheedy, Brian Dennehy and Amy Madigan. The film was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards (Best Actor – Hackman, Best Supporting Actress – Madigan). Madigan also received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Night Moves (1975)

Directed by Arthur Penn (Bonnie and Clyde, Little Big Man), Night Moves rethinks the conventions of 1940s film noir with a 1970s sensibility. Hackman stars as a Los Angeles detective who leaves his marital woes behind to pursue a missing person case in the Florida Keys and in the process, reopens an old murder investigation. Night Moves also features Jennifer Warren (Ice Castles, Slap Shot), James Woods and 17-year-old Melanie Griffith in her feature film debut.

Scarecrow (1973)

An ex-con (Gene Hackman) and an ex-sailor (Al Pacino) learn about each other and themselves when they scheme to save their pennies to buy a car wash. Cited by Hackman as one of his favorite roles, Scarecrow marks the first and only on-screen pairing of Hackman and Pacino. Directed by Jerry Schatzberg, with glowing cinematography from Vilmos Zsigmond (The Deer Hunter, Close Encounters of the Third Kind), Scarecrow won the Palm d’Or at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival.
